bdays.

Celebrated a few special people’s birthdays over the weekend – Grandma & Walter! Got all fancy-like and went to to the hottest restaurant in Lacey, Terrace Falls 😉 Took the opportunity with the new camera to get some family shots as you can never have too many of those. Good times with good family!

garden update.

I’d like to think that we’ve hit phase two in yee old garden these days. Ya’ll know just how crazy hot it’s been in Seattle and the garden definitely has responded to those 90+ degree temps (so has my water bill). I pulled the lettuces and peas last week as they were either bolting or dried up. We had a great pea harvest this year so I didn’t feel too bad yanking them up though Stella was sniffing around for them. Spoiled dog.

Hiking near Mt. Rainier Shriner Peak - cultivatedrambler.com

The mountains have been calling my name lately and decided it was time to pull the trigger and head to the baddest mountain around, Rainier. Many of the campgrounds located down there are first come, first serve which don’t always appeal to this planner gal so when I read that they have a handful that can be reserved, I jumped at the chance.

I’d been to Ohanapecosh Campground back in the day with my Mom and remember it being a pretty special place. We luckily got a site in A loop, which I think is the best one out of the bunch, especially if you could snag a river side one like we did. Nothing beat a cold beer and a dip in the river post hike! Watching: Tomatoes ripen in the garden. WTF? I know that everything is early this year, but tomatoes in June? Get outta here.

Loving: Stella’s Elvis impression. Poor puppy has about half her teeth which makes for some ca-ute lipped pouts. Can’t get enough of her.

Listening to: The crazy amount of birds in our yard. I’ve worked very hard to keep our yard organic so as to attract beneficial birds and insects and it must be paying off! We live very close to Boeing Field and I always worried that the flight traffic would keep them away, but I guess not!

Doing: I recently spoke on a panel about non-profit event planning at the Advancement NW conference. This was my first public speaking engagement and I was HELLA nervous. I practiced for a week straight and it paid off! I loved seeing people taking frantic notes and nodding their heads as I was speaking. It was a very validating and rewarding experience!

Reading: Haven’t actually read this book yet, but I’m working on a 4,500 book mailing at work (see top left photo of my temporary book storage in our parking garage!) Not sure why I volunteered to complete this project….I don’t know a thing about special mailings and this one is a doozy. I’ll be celebrating with a bottle of bubbly when these hit mailboxes. Sheesh.

Eating: Our first batch of CSA cherries! Oh man….so glad that we signed up for a fruit CSA this year through Tonnemaker! We’re pretty good on veggies with the help of our backyard garden so having a fruit-only CSA fills in the gaps for us. They had a bumper crop of cherries so we ordered extras to enjoy this week. Yum!

Thinking about: Our upcoming camping trip to Mt. Rainier. I’m so excited to get out of town for the weekend and I haven’t been to the southern part of Rainier in AGES. Looking forward to hitting up a day hike near Paradise and the general relaxation of camping with friends and family.

Common Pacific Northwest garden pests and diseases
Our garden is good from afar, but far from good! Trying to keep it real here folks. Yes, I work my butt off to try and keep things tidy in the garden but time and time again, I’ve been shown that no matter what I do, the garden gods will do as they please. And as they please means disease, pests, seeds that don’t sprout…you name it, I’ve witnessed it. I try and not take it too personally, but man, it can be a bummer sometimes! Here are the few issues I’ve been dealing with as of late:
